Chicken Eye

The testing method on eye of isolated chicken (OPI) is a testing method in vitro being able to be used to classify substances among corrosive and strongly irritating substances the “for the eyes”.
Method OPI uses eyes taken on chickens coming from slaughter-houses, where they are killed at human food purposes, thus avoiding the recourse to ders animal of laboratory. The eye is énucléé and placed on a support of eye, the cornea being in horizontal position. The substance of test and controls negative/positive are applied to the cornea.
The toxic effects for the cornea are estimated starting from a qualitative evaluation of its opacity, a qualitative evaluation of the damage of the epithelium on the basis of fluorescein retention, a quantitative measurement of the increase its thickness (swelling), and a qualitative evaluation of the macroscopic morphological damage of surface. Each one of these evaluations results in a classification OPI, and the combination of the corresponding classifications provides a classification of irritation for each substance.
